Where’s Drew, December 2017 Edition

Now that it’s finally gotten a little chillier here in Ohio, I had hoped to take some time away from doing SQL-server related things and spend time doing more “me” things and just enjoying the holidays. Turns out, that wasn’t so much the case. Here’s what I’m working on and where you can find me this month:

• In case you missed it, I had a nice little streak going about the recently-publicly-released SQL Operation Studio:
  • Building custom dashboard widgets in SQL Operations Studio was the first post in the series and if page count is any indicator, holy cow, you guys really liked that one. For those of you that didn’t read it, you can take a simple SQL Query and turn it into a dashboard graph to display right on the “home” page when you open a connection. It’s pretty slick stuff that really shows off the “open” framework bundled in the application.
  • Of course, if you do plan on going all-in on SQL Operations Studio and you have a nice collection of registered servers in SQL Server Management Studio, you can export your currently saved servers using PowerShell. I wrote a quick script to do that, and the post also shows off how that information is saved in Operations Studio.
  • Finally, I wrote about how you can wire-up Operations Studio to a source control solution like Github and/or VSTS. Good stuff if you haven’t taken a stab at using SVN for SQL scripts.
• Also, speaking of blog posts, I have a year-end post coming but it isn’t what you think… it’s not about what I did on this site, or even in the technical community. Watch the site for when it drops (hopefully a day or so after this post).
• As far as speaking engagements this month, I’ll be talking to the Columbus PASS Chapter on Thursday, December 14th. Topic? SQL Server and PowerShell. You might even get to see more about the recent SQL Script Analyzer I wrote!
• The rest of the month has been dedicated to getting ready for my upcoming class I’m putting on in mid-January in conjunction with Brent Ozar Unlimited. It’s sold out (which is amazing!) and if everything goes well maybe I’ll do another… but I am hyper-focused on making sure it’s everything I want it to be (and hopefully everything the attendees want too).
